Do you remember the exact name of the one they gave you? It makes a difference in whether or not there is an increased risk to the baby. Chloroquine phosphate, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and mefloquine are safe for pregancy, but not as many studies have been done in the first trimester. Doxycycline and atovaquone/proguanil are not recommended. The risk to a fetus is greater when malaria is being treated (ongoing) rather than prevention. To be on the safe side, stay away from drinks and other things containing quinine such as some softdrinks and tonic water. I doubt there’s anything for you to worry about, but if I were you, I’d ask the OB/GYN.
